What do we mean by old bricks?

Old bricks are literally the building blocks of our history. At Van Dillen Antique Building Materials, we refer to old bricks when they come from demolished old buildings and farms and can be prepared for reuse. These bricks are often decades to centuries old, and each piece carries a part of the past with it. Most bricks in an old building are good enough for a second life; however, in the mid-1930s, they began using harder mortar for bricklaying, which sometimes makes it impossible to remove these bricks from the cement. After the bricks are carefully chipped and cleaned, they receive a new life as building materials for both restoration and modern projects, where the authentic appearance and their unique character are of great importance. The aesthetic beauty of these old bricks is that they have a certain charm due to the different firing processes they underwent in the past. This literally and figuratively adds an extra touch to your construction project.

What does an old brick cost?

The price of old bricks can vary and depends on various factors. The factors taken into account include: the origin, the estimated age, the quantities, and of course (the costs of) the processing process. Additionally, it also depends on the type of brick. Some are more special than others. On average, a single old brick costs between €0.60 and €1.80. For larger quantities, expressed in m², this is approximately between €65 and €125 per m² excluding VAT. Of course, there are exceptions in both cheap and very expensive variants, depending on rare or less rare materials. These prices reflect not only the rarity of the bricks but also the costs for carefully chipping, cleaning, and storing these antique materials.

Bricks fall under masonry bricks. The variation in price is determined by the condition, the firing process such as molded or handmade, and the age. It is important to realize that each brick is unique and that the prices reflect what it costs to restore these bricks to their former glory and prepare them for reuse in modern or historical projects.
