What are reclaimed bricks?
Reclaimed bricks are bricks recovered from existing and demolished buildings and prepared for reuse. Differences in age, clay, firing, production method and origin mean that there are many types, each with its own dimensions, texture and colours. Read more in our blog about types of old bricks.
Our collection includes:
- Groningen bricks
- Frisian yellow bricks
- Handmade bricks
- Old IJssel bricks
- Moulded bricks
- 1930s bricks
Groningen bricks are known for their distinctive red to red-orange shades. Frisian yellow bricks have yellow, often varied tones. Old handmade bricks have a more irregular surface and natural size variations, while moulded bricks generally have cleaner lines and more consistent dimensions. IJssel bricks are relatively small and come in different colours and production methods. We also stock characteristic 1930s bricks from this distinctive period of architecture.
Within each brick type, dimensions, textures and colours also vary. Every reclaimed batch is therefore different, with suitable options for both historic repairs and new construction.
What are old bricks used for?
Old bricks are widely used for facades, restoration, renovation and new-build projects where an authentic appearance is wanted. They are also suitable for garden walls, sheds, outbuildings, internal walls and repairs to historic brickwork.
For restoration, bricks can be selected to match the dimensions, colour and texture of the existing masonry. In new construction, old facing bricks give a building character and a weathered appearance from the outset. Our completed projects with reclaimed building materials show old bricks reused in homes, extensions, garden walls and other building projects.
Historic batches vary considerably, so colour is only one consideration. Size, texture, production method, sorting and the availability of sound header faces, the short ends of the bricks, can also determine their suitability. The chosen brick bond also influences the finished facade.
Different colours of old bricks
Antique bricks come in many colours and shades. Our range includes red, red-orange, reddish-brown, purple and yellow bricks, as well as grey to blue-grey bricks produced by reduction firing.
The final colour depends on factors including the clay, firing process and kiln conditions. Natural colour differences can therefore occur even within one batch.
After years of use, bricks may retain traces of lime and mortar. Cleaning prepares them for reuse, while some of these natural signs of age may remain visible. These traces contribute to the distinctive, varied appearance of reclaimed brickwork.
From demolition brick to reclaimed masonry brick
Before an old brick can be reused, it goes through a careful process. Bricks are recovered from existing buildings and cleaned to remove as much old mortar as possible. They are then checked and sorted by quality, size and suitability for reuse. Our blog about cleaning mortar from bricks explains the process in detail.
The header faces are also important. Certain brick bonds require enough bricks with sound short ends. Taking this into account during sorting allows old batches to be reused in traditional brickwork.
After cleaning and sorting, the bricks are stacked on pallets and prepared for transport. Existing building materials gain a new life and can form part of a facade, wall or building for decades to come.
Buy old bricks and reclaimed facing bricks
At Van Dillen Antieke Bouwmaterialen, you will find a large, changing collection of second-hand bricks in different colours, sizes and grades. This ranges from small remaining lots to large batches for complete facades, and from old handmade bricks to more consistently sized moulded bricks.
Our old bricks are carefully cleaned of mortar, checked and sorted before being offered for reuse. Depending on the application, we also consider dimensions, colour, texture and the availability of enough sound header faces. For more about price differences between batches, read our blog about the price of old bricks.
We continually buy and process reclaimed building materials, so the available range changes regularly. If you cannot find the brick you need, please contact us. We will be happy to help you find a suitable batch for your restoration, renovation or new-build project.
