What are handmade bricks?

Handmade bricks are traditional masonry bricks that were originally made entirely by hand. In this craft process, a wooden mould was dampened and sprinkled with sand before a ball of clay was thrown into it by hand. The excess clay was then struck off, and the brick was dried and fired. This method created characteristic irregularities, subtle differences in size and natural colour variations. Every handmade brick is therefore unique. These qualities give reclaimed handmade bricks their warm, lively and authentic appearance, making them very suitable for restoring historic buildings as well as characterful new builds. Their previous life and careful cleaning of old mortar give these reclaimed bricks even more character. Curious about other types of historic facing brick? How do they differ from other reclaimed masonry bricks?

The main differences between handmade bricks and most other reclaimed masonry bricks lie in their manufacture and characteristic appearance. While many moulded bricks were machine-made and are therefore more regular in size, handmade bricks are distinguished by their natural variation. Characteristics include:

• a rough texture;
• irregular edges;
• natural colour variations;
• slight differences in size.

The distinctive texture comes from throwing the clay by hand into a sanded wooden mould. The sand prevented the clay from sticking to the mould while also contributing to the characteristic surface texture. This natural variation makes handmade bricks particularly suitable for restoration and building projects where authenticity and appearance are central.

The advantages of handmade bricks

Despite slight differences in size, handmade bricks can be used successfully in many different building projects. Many reclaimed handmade bricks are in the Waalformaat, but smaller sizes such as Frisian yellow bricks and IJssel bricks are also regularly available. Handmade bricks are robust, frost-resistant and have long been valued for their authentic appearance in restoration, renovation and characterful new builds. Their natural texture and colour variations give every facade, interior wall or garden wall a distinctive, lively character. Reusing historic handmade bricks also gives them a second life, making them a sustainable choice.
