How to Chip Bricks?
In the world of renovation and construction, reusing materials is not only a matter of sustainability but also of adding character to a project. Reused historical materials contribute to an authentic and characterful appearance. At van Dillen antique building materials, we specialize in carefully dismantling old farms and buildings to give these materials a new life by chipping the bricks. Cleaning old masonry bricks is quite a task, and an important part of this process is โchippingโ the bricks. But what does this entail, and how does it work?
What is Chipping Bricks?
Chipping is the careful removal of mortar residues and dirt from used bricks and tiles, so they can be reused in construction or renovation projects. Chipping bricks is primarily done by hand. This process is carried out meticulously to ensure that the dimensions of the bricks are correct. Nowadays, there are also machines available for chipping. Chipping bricks helps preserve the authentic character of the bricks while making them suitable for reuse. It is an essential step in the recycling of building materials. After chipping, the bricks or tiles are further cleaned to prepare them for use.
Want to Have Bricks Chipped?
At van Dillen antique building materials, we not only offer a wide range of recycled old bricks and tiles, but we also provide the service of chipping bricks. With our expertise, we ensure that each brick is treated with care, preserving its authenticity while preparing it for a new life in your construction project. Whether you are looking for specific masonry bricks for a restoration or unique tiles for a new design, we are happy to assist you. Since each brick, facade, and masonry structure requires a different form of chipping, it is necessary to assess each situation individually. Please feel free to contact us for inquiries about our brick chipping service! Note that for bricks made after 1935, it is almost always impossible to chip them; the old chipped bricks from the 1920s and 1930s are the last type of old bricks from which the lime cement can still be effectively removed. Few things are more beautiful and characterful than an old chipped brick; chipping bricks, along with dismantling and cleaning, adds a lovely touch to an authentic old brick, alongside the normal signs of โlifeโ and lime residues.
Reusing materials is not only a sustainable choice but also adds authenticity and character to every project. Are you interested in having bricks chipped or purchasing chipped bricks for your next project? Contact van Dillen antique building materials for more information and advice. Together, we will give the most beautiful historical materials a new life.
What Tools Do I Need to Chip?
For chipping bricks, you need specific tools to carry out the job efficiently and safely. However, there are various options. This includes:
- A chipping hammer, chisel hammer, or joint chisel.
- A hammer to strike the chipping hammer, chisel hammer, or joint chisel.
- A hand brush or a soft brush for removing loose dirt.
- Personal protective equipment such as gloves, dust mask, and safety glasses.
- A place to dispose of waste.
- An electrically powered chipping machine (knowledge/experience required).
- A pneumatic chipping hammer.
How to Chip Tiles?
The process for chipping tiles is similar to that for bricks. However, chipping tiles requires extra attention because the tiles are very fragile. Especially with old tiles that have a glaze layer, caution is essential. First, you need to remove the mortar residues from the bottom. Next, clean the side of the tile as thoroughly as possible with a (steel) brush. Use a gentler approach and finer tools like a smaller chisel to prevent damage.
Want to Have Old Tiles Chipped?
You can also have your old floor tiles chipped by us; the same applies as with the bricks. Each type of tile requires a separate job and amount of work to completely remove the lime cement due to the size, hardness of the cement, and age. For this reason, we need to assess each job individually and charge separate rates for each chipping service. Please feel free to contact us; we are happy to help!
