Old stained-glass doors

Authentic old stained-glass doors with character

The special quality of used stained-glass doors lies in the craftsmanship that is rarely found today. The lead profiles were set by hand and the pieces of glass were carefully chosen for colour and transparency. When daylight falls through such a door, it creates a play of coloured light that changes with the season and time of day. These old doors are more than functional: they are a defining element that gives character to a dining room or living room.

Interior doors with stained glass were used mainly between 1900 and 1940 in well-appointed homes. Owners chose these doors to separate spaces visually without blocking the light. They still serve that same function today, now also as a statement of authenticity and craft. Van Dillen selects doors that are structurally sound: the woodwork is solid, the glass is intact and the lead profiles are complete. Minor defects are repaired where needed, so you receive a door that can be installed straight away.

Different styles and periods: from art deco to the 1930s

A 1930s stained-glass door has a clearly different style from older examples. Doors from around the turn of the century often show floral motifs or art nouveau curls, while 1930s doors are known for geometric patterns, clean lines and more restrained use of colour. Art deco stained glass combines that geometry with a luxurious feel: think trapezoids, sunburst motifs and amber or deep-blue glass alongside clear glass.

Van Dillen has a changing collection covering various periods. Some doors have a classic symmetrical pattern with a central floral motif, while others feature clean graphic designs. Old ensuite doors with stained glass are rare and highly sought after because they create a generous opening with a rich appearance.

Where do these stained-glass doors come from?

Every door offered by Van Dillen Antieke Bouwmaterialen has a past. Most old stained-glass doors come from private townhouses and historic buildings that are being demolished or thoroughly renovated. In that process, authentic elements often disappear, such as old masonry bricks or antique floor tiles. The same goes for antique sliding doors. We make sure these doors are preserved and given a second life in a new home.

After removal, the doors are cleaned and checked. Loose leadwork is repaired. Broken panes are replaced with matching old glass where possible. The woodwork is stripped of loose paint and dirt while retaining its patina. This gives you a door that is authentic, functional and safe to install. Its history adds meaning: you choose not only for appearance, but also for preserving heritage.
