How do reduction-fired floor tiles get their blue-grey colour?

These traditional Dutch tiles, called estrikken, are also known as grey reduction-fired floor tiles. Their characteristic colour comes from a specific firing process. After the clay has been fired at a high temperature, the oxygen supply in the kiln is deliberately restricted. This causes a chemical process in which oxygen is drawn out of the clay, known in Dutch as smoren. The colour changes from natural red to deep blue-grey. Subtle shades can vary from tile to tile, adding to the floor’s distinctive, robust character.

The difference between reduction-fired and glazed tiles

Although reduction-fired and glazed estrikken can sometimes look similar, their production processes are completely different. It is useful to understand the distinction for your project.

The reduction-firing process:

• The clay is traditionally fired in a kiln.
• Oxygen is removed during this firing process.
• The oxygen shortage creates a lasting blue-grey shade.
• The colour runs through the tile and therefore cannot wear away.

The glazing process:

• The tiles are first fired in the usual way.
• A glaze of a specific colour is then applied.
• The surface is smoother and glossier, but the top layer can wear over time.
