Tiles, or as they are commonly spelled today, “estrikken,” are characterized by the glaze layer on them. In common usage, both old farmhouse tiles and antique tiles are often used interchangeably. In fact, old tiles are simply glazed terracotta tiles.

The glazed tiles are typically Dutch; these tiles were made in virtually no other neighboring country. We also have a beautiful assortment of ‘normal’ unglazed old tiles. As mentioned, we know the antique tiles, originally written as “estrikken,” as a glazed tile; however, we also have a range of normal Dutch tiles in colors from red to orange to even gray smoked tiles. This color was produced by extracting oxygen and adding extra coal, literally ‘smoking’ the tile. Through this artisanal baking method, the tiles achieved a light gray to anthracite color, a beautiful neutral shade that is currently very popular as it pairs well with modern interiors. This way, you get a lived-in old floor that has a beautiful natural color variation because each tile is slightly differently baked, perfectly complementing your modern decor.
